The Cedar Grove Historical Society
will present a program titled, “Railways to Caldwell: Part 1,”
at its general meeting:
Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m.
at the Cedar Grove Public Library, located at 1 Municipal Plaza.
Phil Jaeger will give a PowerPoint presentation that examines the remains of the Caldwell Railroad, which in 1872 began construction of a railroad between Montclair and Caldwell.
Construction was never completed because of the difficulty of boring a tunnel through First Mountain as well as a national financial crisis. The successor to the Caldwell Railroad was the Caldwell Railway that avoided going through the mountain by being routed through Cedar Grove and Verona.
The line, which later became the Caldwell Branch of the Erie Railroad, will be examined in detail through 1979 when the rails were removed.
Part II of the program will be presented Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Cedar Grove Public Library.
