UPCOMING EVENTS

HAPPY 187TH BIRTHDAY PRESIDENT CLEVELAND!

The Gilded Age Cookbook: Recipes and Stories from America's Golden Era, Presidential Sports And Activities, and Trivia Night Headline Grover Cleveland’s Birthday Celebration!

The Grover Cleveland Birthplace Memorial Association will be presenting its annual birthday celebration for Grover Cleveland on Saturday April 13th, at the St. Aloysius Church Gymnasium, 219 Bloomfield Avenue, Caldwell, (next door to the Grover Cleveland Birthplace).  There will be a variety of speakers and activities to celebrate the birthday of our 22nd and 24th President.  This year, our event will be a “belated celebration”, partially due to the present renovation of the birthplace “Carriage House”, the last phase of the building of the Visitor’s Center for the facility.  Come for the whole day or for programs suited for you and your family.

The following schedule is planned for the April 13th Celebration.

1:15 p.m. Opening Ceremony, GCBMA President Paul Maloney.  Updates on the Visitor’s Center and the Presidential Library.  “Young Grover the Good”.

Membership in the GCBMA.  Items from our Gift Store.

2:00 p.m.  Becky Diamond, Author of the Book “The Gilded Age Cookbook: Recipes and Stories from America's Golden Era”.

From Becky Diamond’s website, “The American Gilded Age (1868 to 1900) and its extreme extravagance continue to be a source of wonder and fascination, particularly for foodies. The style and excessiveness of this era has ties to modern popular culture through books, films, and television shows, including The Alienist and the Julian Fellowes TV series The Gilded Age, on HBO.

The Gilded Age Cookbook transports the reader back in time to lavish banquet tables set with snow-white linen tablecloths, delicate china, and sparkling crystal glasses. Cuisine featuring rich soups, juicy roasts, and luscious desserts come to life through historic images and artistic photography. Gilded Age details and entertaining stories of celebrities from the era—the Vanderbilts, Astors, Goelets, and Rockefellers—are melded with historic menus and recipes updated for modern kitchens”.

3:30 p.m. Presidential Sports, Presidential Historian and GCBMA Board Member, Louis Picone.

4:10 p.m.  After a presentation on sports of American Presidents, there will be opportunities for participants of all ages to play interpretations of games and activities throughout American History.  Prizes will be awarded for children.

What favorite activities started during the days of Grover Cleveland and are both Olympic sports today?  What colonial pastime is similar to a 1950’s baby boomer activity?  What game using your hand, including your thumb was a popular pastime 100 years ago?

The events during the day are free but contributions are accepted. Click the eventbrite link below to reserve your spot today.

7:00 p.m. Trivia Night, James and Kelly Gardner, 7:00 p.m. Trivia Night, hosted by the GCBMA & Your History Your Story Podcast.  www.yourhistoryyourstory.com.   Admission is $10.00.

Outdoor Fun at the Grover Cleveland Birthplace

In between the construction of the Visitor Center and the upcoming restoration of the historic carriage house, the Grover Cleveland Birthplace staff was able to test a new program for larger school groups, Outdoor Fun at the Grover Cleveland Birthplace. So far, three groups of local 2nd and 3rd graders and their teachers have participated in this immersive 90-minute program. The students enjoyed exploring the grounds of the Grover Cleveland Birthplace with an Architectural Scavenger Hunt, touring the museum, investigating replica artifacts up close, and playing with historic games and toys. This program is designed for groups of 25-40 students in grades K-4 and requires a minimum student-chaperone ratio of 6 to 1.
This program is all about fostering curiosity and empowering students to pose their own surprising and delightful questions such as:
Did Grover Cleveland have a pet? Why is there a bathtub in the middle of the kitchen? Why do you use plexiglass to protect certain artifacts? If there is no plumbing, where did people go to the bathroom? Why wasn’t Grover born in the hospital?
The historic educators enjoy fielding these questions because they open the door for deeper conversations about Cleveland’s life, early 19th century living, museum operations and many other topics.
Once the dust has settled next year from the remodeling of our historic carriage house, we will be ready to host more large groups of students. In the meantime, we will be working on developing even more content for our community of learners.
